There is absolutely nothing wrong with visiting the famous attractions when you travel abroad. In fact, some of them are famous for good reason. If you’re visiting Tokyo, you may want to experience Shibuya, Asakusa, or other well-known areas. If you’re traveling to Paris, seeing the Eiffel Tower makes sense.
If you’re visiting New York, you may want to spend time in Central Park or see some of the city’s famous landmarks.
The difference is what you do after that. Once you’ve seen the major attractions, give yourself some time to explore the destination beyond the standard tourist itinerary.
Every city has neighborhoods, restaurants, markets, cafés, independent stores, cultural venues, parks, and local events that may not receive the same attention as the major attractions.

Is public transportation nearby? Are there good restaurants in the area? Is the hotel comfortable and quiet? Most importantly, does the experience justify the price?

Some of the most interesting experiences you’ll have abroad may not be found on the usual sightseeing lists. Local festivals and events are a perfect example.
